Zaid bin Haritsah, Origin of the Verses About Adopted Children

Zaid bin Haritsah was a friend of the Prophet who was the cause of the revelation of the verse about adopted children. The story starts from Zaid being kidnapped when he was invited by his mother to go to his hometown. Then, he was attacked and instantly made a slave by the captors.

His mother searched for Zaid’s whereabouts because she wanted to know if her son was gone or still alive. After being tired from the accumulated worry, his mother got the happy news that her son was still alive and living in the city of Mecca with the Prophet SAW. He adopted Zaid as a son.

Hearing the news, the mother rushed to the city of Medina with money to redeem her son. When he arrived at the Prophet’s residence, he asked Zaid to choose whether to stay with the Prophet or to go home with his mother. If he returns, then the Messenger of Allah will not take the ransom money from Zaid’s parents.

Zaid chose to live with the Prophet. He gathered people around to announce that Zaid was his son and heir. However, from this event, Allah’s verse of Surat Al-Ahzab verse 5 came down which states that adopted children should still be called by the name of their biological father, not the adoptive father.

“Call them (the adopted children) by (wearing) the names of their (biological) fathers; that is more just in the sight of God, and if you do not know their fathers, then (call them as) your religious brothers and your elders”

(QS al-Ahzaab: 5).

That is asbabun nuzul about adopted children. Muslims who want to adopt a child should know the law based on Islamic Shari’a which can be accessed through the content of the priority of caring for orphans.

In the end, Zaid bin Haritsah became one of the closest companions of the Prophet SAW. Then, Zaid bin Haritsah became the only friend of the Prophet Muhammad whose name is immortalized in the Al Quran.
