13 Hadith about Cleanliness and Their Meanings
The following are hadiths about cleanliness that Muslims must know along with their meanings:
1. Islam is built on Cleanliness
The Prophet SAW once stated the importance of cleaning everything, because Islam emphasizes cleanliness as the basis of its teachings.
God bless you God willing
“Tanzahhafu bikulli ma istatha’tum fa inna Allaha ta’ala bani al-Islama ‘ala an-nazafati wa lan yadkhula al-jannata illa kullu nazifin.”
Meaning: “Clean everything as much as you can. Indeed, Allah Ta’ala built this Islam on the foundation of cleanliness and no one will enter Paradise except everyone who is clean.” (Narrated by Ath-Thabrani).
In another narration, Aisyah Radhiallahu Anha mentioned that the Messenger of Allah once said which means:
بُنِيَ الدِّيْنُ عَلَى النَّظَافَةِ
“Buniya ad-dinu ‘ala an-nazafah.”
“Meaning: Religion is built on the basis of cleanliness.” (Narrated by Muslim).
2. Cleanliness is Part of Faith
This hadith is a popular hadith and is often heard. This hadith is taken from a book compiled by Imam Al-Ghazali, namely the Book of Ihya’ Ulumuddin. The Messenger of Allah (saw) said:
الطُّهُورُ شَطْرُ الْإِيمَانِ
“At-tuhuru shatru al-iimani.”
Meaning: “Purity is half of faith.” (HR Muslim).
3. Allah SWT Likes Pure Places
In the hadith about cleanliness, a hadith is narrated that Allah SWT likes pure things and clean places. Rasulullah saw said:
God willing, God willing, God willing, God willing
“Inna Allaha thayyibun yuhibbu at-thaayyiba, nazifun yuhibbu an-nazaafata, karimun yuhibbu al-karama, jawadun yuhibbu al-juuda, fanazzifu afniyatakum.”
From the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): Indeed, Allah SWT is pure who loves pure things, He is Most Clean who loves cleanliness, He is Most Noble who loves glory, He is Most Beautiful who loves beauty, therefore clean your places.” (Narrated by Tirmizi).
4. There is a Great Reward in Maintaining Cleanliness
Quoted from the Fiqh Thaharah book by Ibn Abdullah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) once said that Allah SWT will surely promise heaven for anyone who cleans or removes tree branches on the road that will disturb people passing by on the road. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
,مرَّ رجُلٌ بِغُصْنِ شَجَرَةٍ عَلَى ظَهْرِ طَرِيْقٍ فَقَالَ : وَاللَّهِ لَأُنَحِّيَنَّ هذَا عَنِ
God willing
“Marra rajulun bighusni shajaratin ‘ala dhahri tariqin faqala: Wa-llahi la’unahhiyanna hadha ‘anil-muslimina la yu’dhiruhum, fa’udkhila al-jannata.”

“Ibn ‘Umar said, Indeed I heard the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallama say: “Prayer is not accepted without purification, and charity is not accepted from theft (ghanimah wealth).” (Narrated by Muslim, Abu Daud, Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah) [No. 224 Sharh Sahih Muslim] Sahih.
In another hadith it is also explained that cleanliness is the key to prayer. Rasulullah saw said:

“Qala Rasulullah sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallama: Miftahu as-salati at-tuhuru wa tahrimuha at-takbiru wa tahleeluha at-taslimu, wa la salata liman lam yaqra’ bil-hamdi wa suratin fi fardatin aw ghayriha.”
Meaning: “The Messenger of Allah sallallaahu alaihi wasallam said: “The opening of prayer is purification, its beginning is takbir, its closing is greeting, and the prayer of one who does not recite Surat Al-Fatihah and a letter (from the Quran) is not valid, both in obligatory prayers and other prayers.” (Narrated by Tirmidhi) [No. 238 Maktabatu Al Maarif Riyadh] Sahih.

“Qala Rasulullah sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam: Takhallalu fa innahu nazafah, wal-nazafatu tad’u ila al-imani wal-imanu ma’a sahibihi fil-jannah.” (HR. At-Tabrani)

Meaning: “When one of you wakes up, let him wash his hands before putting them in the place of ablution. Indeed, he does not know where his hands have spent the night.” (HR. Muslim: 269)
