13 Hadith about Cleanliness and Their Meanings

The following are hadiths about cleanliness that Muslims must know along with their meanings:

1. Islam is built on Cleanliness

The Prophet SAW once stated the importance of cleaning everything, because Islam emphasizes cleanliness as the basis of its teachings.

God bless you God willing

“Tanzahhafu bikulli ma istatha’tum fa inna Allaha ta’ala bani al-Islama ‘ala an-nazafati wa lan yadkhula al-jannata illa kullu nazifin.”

Meaning: “Clean everything as much as you can. Indeed, Allah Ta’ala built this Islam on the foundation of cleanliness and no one will enter Paradise except everyone who is clean.” (Narrated by Ath-Thabrani).

In another narration, Aisyah Radhiallahu Anha mentioned that the Messenger of Allah once said which means:

“Buniya ad-dinu ‘ala an-nazafah.”

“Meaning: Religion is built on the basis of cleanliness.” (Narrated by Muslim).

2. Cleanliness is Part of Faith

This hadith is a popular hadith and is often heard. This hadith is taken from a book compiled by Imam Al-Ghazali, namely the Book of Ihya’ Ulumuddin. The Messenger of Allah (saw) said:

“At-tuhuru shatru al-iimani.”

Meaning: “Purity is half of faith.” (HR Muslim).

3. Allah SWT Likes Pure Places

In the hadith about cleanliness, a hadith is narrated that Allah SWT likes pure things and clean places. Rasulullah saw said:

God willing, God willing, God willing, God willing

“Inna Allaha thayyibun yuhibbu at-thaayyiba, nazifun yuhibbu an-nazaafata, karimun yuhibbu al-karama, jawadun yuhibbu al-juuda, fanazzifu afniyatakum.”

From the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): Indeed, Allah SWT is pure who loves pure things, He is Most Clean who loves cleanliness, He is Most Noble who loves glory, He is Most Beautiful who loves beauty, therefore clean your places.” (Narrated by Tirmizi).

4. There is a Great Reward in Maintaining Cleanliness

Quoted from the Fiqh Thaharah book by Ibn Abdullah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) once said that Allah SWT will surely promise heaven for anyone who cleans or removes tree branches on the road that will disturb people passing by on the road. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

God willing

“Marra rajulun bighusni shajaratin ‘ala dhahri tariqin faqala: Wa-llahi la’unahhiyanna hadha ‘anil-muslimina la yu’dhiruhum, fa’udkhila al-jannata.”

It means: “There was a man who threw away a tree branch that was blocking the road, then he said, “By Allah, I will remove this branch so that it does not disturb and hurt the Muslims,” so Allah entered him into heaven.” (HR Muslim).

5. A Servant’s Prayer is Not Accepted Unless He is Clean

The fourth hadith is a hadith that explains the chapter of fiqh about cleanliness being a condition for valid prayer, what is meant by cleanliness here is ablution. Rasulullah SAW said:

God willing, God willing, God willing, God willing, God willing. may Allah bless him and give him peace and blessings

“Ibn ‘Umar said, Indeed I heard the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallama say: “Prayer is not accepted without purification, and charity is not accepted from theft (ghanimah wealth).” (Narrated by Muslim, Abu Daud, Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah) [No. 224 Sharh Sahih Muslim] Sahih.

6. Cleanliness is the Key to Prayer

In another hadith it is also explained that cleanliness is the key to prayer. Rasulullah saw said:

Meaning: “The Messenger of Allah sallallaahu alaihi wasallam said: “The opening of prayer is purification, its beginning is takbir, its closing is greeting, and the prayer of one who does not recite Surat Al-Fatihah and a letter (from the Quran) is not valid, both in obligatory prayers and other prayers.” (Narrated by Tirmidhi) [No. 238 Maktabatu Al Maarif Riyadh] Sahih.

7. Maintain cleanliness before worship by ablution

“An ‘Abdil Malik ibni ‘Umayr, sami’tu Shabiiban Aba Ruḥin yuhaddithu ‘an rajulin min asḥabi an-nabiyyi sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallama; anna rasulallahi sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallama sallaa bihimuṣ-ṣubḥa faqara’a bihimur-Rūma fa’awham, falamma insarafa qala: ‘Innahu yalbasu ‘alayna al-Qur’anu, in aqwaman minkum yuṣallūna ma’ana la yuḥsinūna al-wudū’a, faman shahidaṣ-ṣalāta ma’ana fal-yuḥsini al-wudū’a.”
Meaning: From Abdul Malik ibn Umair, that he once heard Syabib (i.e. Abu Ruh) narrate the following hadith from one of the companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, that the Prophet, peace be upon him. used to perform the morning prayer with them and read Surah Ar-Rum, but he experienced obstacles in his reading. After finishing, he said. said: Indeed we have just experienced an obstacle in reciting the Qur’an. Indeed, there are many people among you who pray with us without performing ablution properly. So whoever joins us in prayer, he should perform his ablution well.

8. Maintaining Cleanliness on Fridays, such as Sacrificing a Camel

This hadith tells how important it is to maintain cleanliness, namely purifying oneself (bathing) before going to the mosque to perform Friday prayers.
“Mani ghtasala yawmal-jumu’ati ghusla al-janabati, thumma raḥa faka’annamā qarraba badanata.”
Meaning: Whoever takes a bath on Friday like his bath for intercourse, then leaves at the first time, it is as if he sacrificed a camel. Hadith presented by Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim.

9. Cleanliness Invites faith.

The ninth hadith narrates how cleanliness can invite someone to be more faithful.

Rasulullah saw said:

“Qala Rasulullah sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam: Takhallalu fa innahu nazafah, wal-nazafatu tad’u ila al-imani wal-imanu ma’a sahibihi fil-jannah.” (HR. At-Tabrani)

“Throw away the remnants of food in your teeth, because that is cleanliness, and cleanliness will invite (lead) to faith, and faith will be with the one who has it in heaven.” (HR. At-Tabrani) Thabrani).

In the book of Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, it is narrated through the hadith of Ubaidillah ibn Umar, from Said ibn Abu Said, from his father, from Abu Hurairah r.a. who has said that the Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, once said:
“Iza aawaya ahadukum ila firashihi fal-yanfudhu bidaakhilati izaarihi, fa innahu laa yadri ma khalfahu ‘alayhi, thumma liyaqul: Bismika rabbi wada’tu janbi, wa bika arfa’uhu, in amsakta nafsi fa-rhamha, wa in arsaltaha fahfazha bima tahfazu bihi ‘ibadaka ashaalihin”
Meaning: “When one of you moves to his bed, he should shake his bed with the inside of his cloth, because he does not know what has happened on his bed. Then he should say: ‘In Your name, Oh God, I put my body down and with You I raise it. If You take care of my life, then take care of it as You take care of Your servants.’

11. God Loves His Servant Who Maintains Cleanliness

The Messenger of God said:
“‘An Sāliḥi ibni Abī Ḥasan qāla sami’tu Sa’īda ibnal-Musayyabi yaqūlu: ‘Inna Allaha ṭayyibun yuhibbu at-ṭayyiba, naẓīfun yuhibbu an-naẓāfata, karīmun yuhibbu al-karama, jawādun yuhibbu al-jūda, fanazzifu.'”
It means: “From Salih bin Abu Hassan he said: I heard Said bin Al Musayyab say: ‘Indeed God is Good, and loves the good, Clean and loves the clean, Merciful, and loves generosity, and Noble and love glory, therefore purify yourselves.’ (HR. Tirmidhi)” [No. 2799 Maktabatu Al Maarif Riyadh].
12. Recommendations for Keeping Places of Worship Clean
The Messenger of God said:
“Wa qad amara an-nabiyyu lana bi bina’i al-masajidi fi amaakin iqaamati-him wa tanẓifi-ha wal-ihtimāmi biha nazarā al-‘aṭr.”
From Aisyah r.a. said: Rasulullah saw. has ordered us to build mosques in residential areas and to always be cleaned and perfumed. (HR Ahmad, Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah and Abu Dawud).
13. Wash your hands after sleeping

Rasulullah saw said:

And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: And I will make atonement for you, and … la yadri ayna baatat yaduhu”

Meaning: “When one of you wakes up, let him wash his hands before putting them in the place of ablution. Indeed, he does not know where his hands have spent the night.” (HR. Muslim: 269)

Those are 13 hadiths about cleanliness that Muslims must know as recommendations and orders directly from Allah SWT through the words of the Prophet Muhammad as His messenger. (Andy)
