Compassion is the nature of every human being. Islam teaches its followers to always spread compassion to all of Allah SWT’s creations.
It is said in the book Character Education by Ridwan Abdullah Sani and Muhammad Kadri, the word “compassion” is one of the names of Allah, namely Ar-Rahman and Ar-Rahim. As explained in the first verse of the letter Al-Fatihah, Allah SWT says:
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
Latin: Bismillāhir-raḥmānir-raḥīm.
It means: “In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.” (QS Al-Fatihah: 1).
Apart from the verse, the teachings about compassion in the Qur’an are also contained in the letter Al-Balad verse 17, Allah SWT says:
And he (was not) of those who believed and advised each other to be patient and advised each other to be merciful.” (QS Al-Balad: 17).
Rasulullah SAW also often advised his people to spread love to each other. In this article, we will explain several hadiths about affection that can be role models.
Collection of Hadith about Love
The following hadith about affection is summarized from the book 60 Sahih Hadiths by Faqihuddin Abdul Kodir and the book Nabi the Merciful by Raghib As-Sirjani.
1. First Hadith
Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam said,
Meaning: “Whoever does not love, will certainly not be loved.” (HR Al-Bukhari No. 328, in the Book of Al-Tayamum).
The meaning of the hadith absolutely confirms that those who do not love the servants of Allah SWT, then they will also not be loved by their creator.
2. Second Hadith
The Messenger of Allah SAW taught his people to love anyone on earth. As he said,
Meaning: “Love whoever is on earth, you will surely be loved by whoever is in the sky” (HR At-Tirmidhi no. 1924).
3. Third Hadith
Rasulullah SAW once taught his people to love younger people, including small children. This is as said in the hadith,
Meaning: From Anas, he said, “The Messenger of Allah SAW said, ‘O Anas, respect the elders and love the younger, then you will accompany me in heaven.'” (HR Baihaqi).
4. Fourth Hadith
A person who does not have compassion for others can be said to be among the wretched and miserable. It is said in the hadith, the Messenger of Allah SAW said,
Meaning: “Compassion is not withdrawn except from a miserable person.” (HR Abu Dawud No. 4942).
5. Fifth Hadith
In the book Al-Baqiyatus Shalihat by Rabi’ Abdul Rauf Az-Zawawi, it is stated that affection between fellow Muslims is like togetherness in one body. Rasulullah SAW said,
Meaning: “The example of fellow believers in maintaining a relationship of affection and togetherness is like one body, if one part feels pain, then it will make the whole body awake and feel feverish.” (HR Muslim No. 2586).
6. Sixth Hadith
The Prophet SAW also taught compassion to animals. When someone slaughters an animal, the slaughter should be based on compassion. As explained in the hadith, Rasulullah SAW said:
may Allah bless him and give him peace and blessings And Allah has decreed goodness for everything. If you kill, then kill well. If you slaughter, then slaughter well, sharpen the knife and please the animal when it is slaughtered.” (Narrated by Muslim).
7. Seventh Hadith
Rasulullah SAW’s recommendation to spread love to animals was also mentioned in a history, that there was a woman who went to hell because she had killed a cat during her lifetime. As he said,
“There was a woman who went to hell because of a cat she tied up and didn’t feed, and didn’t let her eat the grass that grew on the earth.” (HR Al-Bukhari).
These are some hadiths about love that all Muslims should emulate towards all living creatures created by Allah SWT.
