Achieving a sakinah, mawaddah, warahmah family is the ideal of all Muslim couples. Of course, there is no better guide to achieve it than the guidance from the word of Allah ﷻ and the hadiths of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

What lessons can we learn from the hadith about family? In this article, we will discuss further the hadith about the sakinah mawaddah warahmah family that we can use as a guide in living our household life.

Hadith about a peaceful family and its meaning and explanation

A peaceful, loving, and compassionate family is a family that is surrounded by peace, love, and affection. There are many hadiths about a peaceful family narrated by the imams that teach us how we can grow this peace and love.

Hadith about being kind to family

In a hadith narrated from Sayyidah Aisyah radiyallahu ‘anha, Rasulullah ﷺ said:

The best of you is the one who is best to his family and I am the best to my family. (HR. At-Tirmidzi)

From the hadith above, we can learn that being good to one’s family is one of the keys to a peaceful family as exemplified by the Prophet ﷺ by treating his family well.

Hadith about the responsibility of family leadership

In addition to behaving well, one of the lessons from the hadith about family is that we must always be responsible for the mandate we carry as family members.

This mandate includes the husband’s duty to lead his family well, the wife’s duty to carry out the mandate to manage the household and children. This is as stated in the hadith narrated by Imam Al-Bukhari:

Each of you is a leader, and each of you will be asked to account for those he leads.

A ruler who leads the people will be asked to account for those he leads.

Every head of a family is a leader of his family and he will be asked to account for those he leads.

And a wife is a leader over her husband’s family and also her children, and she will be asked to account for them.

And a man’s slave is also a leader over his master’s property and will be asked to account for it.

Know that each of you is responsible for those he leads. (Narrated by Al-Bukhari)

Hadith about family sustenance

One of the important parts of a sakinah, mawaddah, and rahmah family is the fulfillment of the rights and obligations of each family member. In the context of the husband as the head of the household, one of the obligations that must be carried out is to provide a living.

In a hadith narrated by Imam Muslim, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught that one dinar that we give to the family will bring a greater reward than one dinar used to give charity to the poor or even free slaves.

From Abu Hurairah radiyallahu ‘anhu, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“One dinar that you spend in the way of Allah, then one dinar that you spend to free a slave, then one dinar that you spend on a poor person, compared to one dinar that you spend on your family, then the greatest reward is the one you give to your family.” (HR. Muslim)

In addition to providing for, what are the obligations of the head of the family in Islam? You can learn more in the article below!

Hadith about husband’s pleasure

In Islam, each partner has a portion of rights and obligations that must be fulfilled as a form of obedience to Allah ﷻ.

Just as a husband has obligations to his wife, a wife also has obligations to her husband, namely doing things that bring pleasure from her husband.

From Umm Salamah radiyallahu ‘anha, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

Whoever a woman dies while her husband is pleased with her, she will enter heaven. (Narrated by Tirmidhi)

This hadith shows that obeying one’s husband in matters permitted by religion in order to seek the husband’s pleasure is one form of obedience to Allah ﷻ. So, just as a husband must treat his family well, a wife also has an obligation to do her best to gain her husband’s pleasure.

Hadith about being patient with the behavior of a partner we don’t like

Marriage is a bond between two people. Of course, both of these people have their own good and bad qualities.

One of the keys to achieving peace and love in the family is to be patient with the behavior of our partner that we don’t like, and to focus on the things that make us happy and joyful in our partner.

The Prophet ﷺ taught us not to hate our partner because of the things we don’t like about him/her. In a hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah radiyallahu ‘anhu, the Prophet ﷺ said:

A believer should not hate a believing woman! Because, if he does not like one of her characteristics, he will certainly like another. (Narrated by Muslim)
