Islam requires its followers to pay debts according to specified agreements. The obligation to pay debts is stated in surah Al Baqarah verse 283,
Meaning: “If you are on a journey (and don’t do your charity in cash) and you don’t have a writer, then there should be a dependent that is held (by the debtor). However, if some of you trust others, then let those who are trusted fulfill it. his mandate (his debt) and let him fear Allah his Lord; and do not you (the witnesses) hide the testimony, then indeed he is a sinner in heart and Allah All-Knowing of what you do.”
Explanation
Quoting from the book Everyday Muslim Guide written by Hamdan Rasyid and Saiful Hadi El-Sutha, debt in Islam is permitted as long as it aims to provide convenience for people in difficulty. Then, the person who gives the debt has the right to collect borrowed property if the deadline has passed and those who are in debt are in a state of being able to pay it.
Islam forbids its followers to collect debts when someone is in a state of being unable to pay. Debts should be collected when they are in a state of ease.
In relation to that, there is a prayer for repayment debt taught by the Prophet Muhammad SAW. This prayer is stated in the hadith.
Prayer to Pay Off Debts according to the Teachings of the Prophet SAW
Explained in the book Prayer and Zikir Throughout the Year by H Hamdan Hamedan, this prayer to pay off debts according to the teachings of the Prophet SAW comes from Ali bin Abi Thalib RA. Once, a slave boy came to Ali and said,
“O Amirul Mukminin, I cannot pay the cost of my release, please help me.”
Ali bin Abi Thalib replied, “Will you teach me the prayer that the Messenger of Allah SAW taught me? Even if your debt is as big as Mount Sirr, Allah will surely help you pay it off.”
The slave replied, “Of course.”
Ali bin Abi Thalib then taught the following prayer to the slave boy,
O Allah, make me sufficient with what I have. You make it lawful from what You have given me. And with Your grace, make me have no need except You.” (HR Tirmidhi and found in Musnad Ahmad bin Hanbal)
Another Version of Debt Repayment Prayer
Summarizing from the book Family Jihad: Building a Successful Household in the Hereafter by A Fatih Syuhud, here are several other prayers for paying off debt that Muslims can read.
1. Prayer to be protected from debt bondage
Latin Arabic: Allaahumma innii a’uudzu bika minal hammi wal hazan, wa a’uudzu bika minal ‘ajzi wal kasal, wa a’uudzu bika minal jubni wal bukhl, wa a’uudzu bika min qahrir rijaal.
Meaning: “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from misery and sadness, from weakness and laziness, from fear and stinginess, from debt bondage and the tyranny of people.”
2. Prayer to be free from debt
Latin Arabic: Allahumma ya farijal ham kasyifal gham mujiba da’watal mudhthorriin rahmanad dunya wal Akhirah warahimahuma anta tarhamuni Farhamni Rahmatan Tughnini Biha Rahmati Man Siwak.
Meaning: “O Allah, who removes worries, is the One who eradicates sorrow, the One who answers the prayers of those who suffer. You are the Most Merciful to all the world and the hereafter and love both. You love me, give me grace that makes me no longer need help other than You .”
3. Prayer so that the doors of fortune will be opened and debts can be paid off
Latin Arabic: Alllhumma innii as’aluka antarzuqunii rizqan halaalan waasi’an thayyiban min ghairi ta’abin walaa musyaqqotin walaa dhairin wala nashabin innaka ‘alaa kulli syai’in qadiir
Meaning: “O Allah, I ask You for a lawful, ample, good provision without hassle, and poverty and without objection and indeed You are over all things.”
Those are some prayers for debt repayment that can be read by Muslims. Hopefully useful.
